This is crazy, but if you don’t like the burst.....

and you think about retopping......

Could you pull that top and flip it over? Then rebrace the back. That would keep you in all Koa.

Or you could go with a blacktop.

Or I could do an all black ukulele. Nah. I'll maybe do the black top. I don't want to retop. I'm too lazy.

If I do the top in black, I would still need to keep the rosette clean since it is abalone so you may get part of your wish.

Alright. I started to hate this burst. It was not what I wanted to do and I really did not like covering up so much beautiful wood. Also, I got a lot of negative feedback on it, so I sanded it off. I think it is for the best.


As of right now, this is one idea I have to cover up this goof but leave as much wood as possible exposed. Any and all suggestions are welcome.
The penciled in area will be black. And I will also even it out. It is a bit lopsided right now because I just quickly drew on the curves.

I guess my personal preference would be for the curves to be faired such that they ended tangent to the side and tangent to the fretboard. Just my opinion - of which I have several

I think you're on the right track, but you need to think flashy instead of coverup. Inlay abalone where I've shaded in green.

Your binding goes against the top edge, the bottom edge is against the koa.
That's what I would do if it were my problem, but it's not, so I don't care!

It's also pretty close to Tony's first attempt at fixing it.

rather than Mr. Dracul's hairline, i think it looks more like a cape draped over someone's shoulders, perhaps Vlad's himself. can you reengineer the headstock to look like the Count from Sesame Street?

Umm...maybe not exactly like the count, but close.

Rodger, I didn't take your initial suggestion because that would mean I had to comment on the the obvious and I wasnt sure if that would cause you distress. However, I think it is plain to see your influence on my current fix. Wow! I totally got through that without mentioning......YOU HAVE A SUPERFLOUS "D" IN YOUR NAME!!!!!

Well, it was Bryan's suggestion initially, I just illustrated it.

Funny you should mention that, here's the story:
The "D" is in my first name because my mother wanted my nickname to be "Rod". Only one person in the world has ever called me "Rod."
My father calls me Pete, probably just to irritate my mother.

I love that idea!

There are times when you can make mistake into an interesting feature, or when the time it takes to fix it is justified because the result will be OK, the instrument or materials is really precious, etc. When it is neither, it is usually better to cut your losses and start over. It will probably take less time, and you will be much happier with the result. My advice is to make a new top, this thing is going down hill.

Tony, maybe you sholud give it some Fender/Gibson treatment. Sand it down, Bondo and paint. Just joking. A sunburst would work. But on koa its not that great of a look. You could just blacken the upper to hide and softly do the rest. With koa it would look wierd. Anyway, not that I care, but thats what I have to say for now.

It is a good thing that nobody cares about this project. Given the time that all of us have spent on this thread, not seeing it come to fruition would be tragic. Instead of the threat of scores of villagers brandishing torches and pitchforks marching on your shop (thanks to general apathy) you face a handful of shrugs and snickers. But don’t let that stop you, go ahead and finish . . . if you want. . . I don’t care.
